Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil (8–12 de Setembro de 2025)

Abstract: This panel addresses the urgent need to embed ethical design and child protection principles into educational technologies. As platforms like Google Classroom become widespread in schools, children are increasingly exposed to data collection practices that lack transparency and accountability. These environments often blur the lines between educational and commercial interests, raising concerns about profiling, targeted advertising, and the erosion of children’s privacy. Through case studies–including the 5Rights Foundation’s Children & AI Design Code and Brazil’s IA na Sala de Aula project–the panel will examine how current EdTech and AI implementations frequently neglect the specific needs and rights of children. These examples reveal systemic gaps in consent, governance, and meaningful participation by students and educators. The discussion aims to promote practical strategies to assess and improve the design of digital learning platforms. Using interactive tools such as Mentimeter and Google Forms, the audience will be invited to reflect on critical issues such as how can we ensure children’s data is protected by design. By bringing together researchers, advocates, and educators, this session will contribute to the development of a rights-based framework for ethical EdTech adoption that prioritizes children’s safety, autonomy, and well-being.
