Abstract: The increasing dominance of major technology providers in educational settings has given rise to a “platformized” educational landscape. This new environment is frequently marked by concerning practices, including extensive extraction of student data and heightened levels of digital surveillance. To address these challenges, a comprehensive ethical design guide has been developed. This fundamental resource is specifically tailored to empower educational institutions, providing them with clear and actionable criteria for the procurement, critical assessment, and responsible implementation of educational software. The robust methodological approach underpinning this guide involved an in-depth analysis of current academic and grey literature, followed by a systematic categorization of observed practices. Collaborative refinement through expert consultation cemented the core pillars of this guide. This rigorous process led to the definition and organization of key ethical practices across several critical domains, most notably governance structures, robust data protection measures, and the ethical application of artificial intelligence in educational environments. Ultimately, this work seeks to significantly bolster the safeguarding of children in online learning environments and to actively foster the widespread adoption of ethically sound and responsible technological solutions throughout the rapidly evolving EdTech sector.
